Every summer the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute hosts Cooking Up a Storm. A time for prospective culinary students to get some "hands on" experience in a kitchen environment and decide whether or not they actually want to pursue this profession. The potential students got to spend time learning from and cooking with the Chefs of OCCI, they covered the bases of classical cuisine to bread baking and pastries. Also, the soon-to-be culinarians also spent time with current culinary students learning the art of sushi making. The best part about the sushi class was that most of the prospective students knew how to roll sushi better than the culinary students, so that was a lot of fun.
Aside from fun cookery times at OCCI, the future culinary students spent a lot of time on the beautiful oregon coast. Hiking, sand boarding and bon fires on the beach were a few of the activities that were part of Cooking Up a Storm. Also, the students got to see what it is like to live in a real life college setting when they roomed in Southwestern student housing during their stay in Coos Bay.
