Community is invited to OCCI Baking Cup

Southwestern Oregon Community College Oregon Coast Culinary Institute Baking and Pastry Arts program students will be participating in the OCCI Baking Cup from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4, at OCCI.

The purpose of the baking cup is to simulate a real-world environment for students to challenge and show off their skills to the community. Two teams will be competing and the bakery will be split in half. Students will begin baking at 7 a.m. and will place their finished work on their display table in the OCCI foyer by 2:30 p.m. for judging.

Scoring is based on four criteria – consistency in weight and appearance; taste; teamwork, organization and cleanliness; and interpretation – and each team will be preparing baguettes, artisan loaves, venoiserie, cookies, tarts and a showpiece with an “Oregon Live” theme. The showpiece must be at least 30 by 30 inches in dimension.

After judging concludes there will be a bake sale to include all leftover items.
